12-Year-Old Boy Defends 73-Year-Old Grandmother Who Was Shot, Shoots Intruder

Over the weekend, two masked men forced their way into a Goldsboro, North Carolina apartment, allegedly demanding money and shooting a 73-year-old woman, prompting the woman’s 12-year-old grandson to defend her by shooting at the intruders before they fled. One of the alleged intruders, suspected of being the shooter, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

“Goldsboro police responded to a report of a shooting on South William Street at about 12:43 a.m.,”  NBC News reported. Saturday. “Police said two masked people forced their way into the apartment, demanded money and shot one of the residents, Linda Ellis, 73, whom a family member identified as the boy’s grandmother.”

One of the alleged intruders, Khalil Herring, 19, of Goldsboro, was reportedly armed. He fled to a nearby intersection after being shot. Both he and Ellis, who was found in the apartment with a gunshot wound, ended up at Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro. Herring died; Ellis was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

“A 12-year-old juvenile occupant of the residence shot at the suspects with a firearm in self-defense, causing them to flee the area,” police officials stated, adding, “Preliminary evidence suggest Khalil Herring was one of the two masked intruders and was shot during the robbery.”

“The intruders had demanded money from 73-year-old Linda Ellis and subsequently shot her, police said in a statement posted on the Goldsboro Police Department’s Facebook page,” Fox Carolina noted. The second intruder has not been arrested yet.

“They came in the house, I open the door, I open it, and they came in there… One guy had a gun. They just put me down on the ground. … The [73-year-old woman] was in the kitchen, I don’t know why they shot her,” said Randolph Bunn, Linda Ellis’ son, the great-uncle of the 12-year-old, ABC 11 reported. “[The intruder] just shot his grandma… He would have shot him too; he would’ve shot me too; he would’ve killed us all.”

Chiquita Coley Ellis, Ellis’ great niece, was shocked at the incident, telling WRAL, “My phone was constantly ringing, and ringing and ringing. I just couldn’t believe she been shot because she’s a good person.” She added, “Why would somebody come into her house and do this? It’s got to stop. I don’t know what they’re thinking around here in Goldsboro, but it’s got to stop.”

No charges are expected to be filed against the boy.

The incident comes amid renewed debate over gun control sparked by the new administration’s agenda. The Daily Wire reported on Sunday:

Democrat President Joe Biden called on Congress to clamp down on Americans’ constitutionally protected Second Amendment rights on Sunday, demanding gun bans and new laws that will allow people to sue gun manufacturers.

“I am calling on Congress to enact commonsense gun law reforms, including requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets,” Biden wrote to Congress.

In the statement, Biden’s call for “banning assault weapons” likely amounts to calling for a ban on semi-automatic firearms, and there was no language included in the statement about allowing gun owners who currently own those weapons to be able to keep those weapons. If gun owners are not allowed to keep those specific semi-automatic firearms under a Biden ban, that would effectively amount to a mandatory gun confiscation-type program.
