Nancy Pelosi has demanded President Trump use his authority to invoke the mass production of personal protective equipment (PPE). On Wednesday, the House speaker claimed the U.S. does not have enough facemasks, goggles and other medical gear.

“PPE, we need it. Why don’t we have it? Because you will not for some reason implement the Defense Production Act.” – Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House

In recent months, PPE sales have become a multibillion dollar industry in international trade, while most facemasks have been primarily made in China.

The House speaker suggested the federal government force businesses to make PPE under the Defense Production Act.

“You have to have the equipment, so we’re saying to the president: Mr. President, get us the equipment,” added Pelosi. “The Defense Production Act require personal protective equipment, not only just to open up the school, but to protect our heroes and our healthcare workers, whether at the state and local government or privately.”

She went on to say she will find a way for Congress to obtain PPE one way or another.
