Boris Johnson’s announcement of harsher Tier 4 restrictions coupled with an abrupt u-turn on the ‘Christmas Relaxation’ of rules has provoked a storm of protest from his own backbench MPs.
The Covid Recovery Group, chaired by Mark Harper, has demanded that the Prime Minister publish a clear exit strategy from the cycle of repeated lockdowns after the Prime Minister announced the news this afternoon. He also stressed that the new measures should be brought before the House of Commons, even if it means that Parliament is recalled from its Christmas recess:
⚠️ Given the 3 tier system and the initial Christmas household rules were expressly authorised by the House of Commons, these changes must also be put to a vote in the Commons at the earliest opportunity, even if that means a recall of the House.

Steve Baker MP, the Deputy Chair of the group which boasts the support of as many as 70 Tory MPs echoed the same position:
💬 Sad day. Lockdowns have failed in slowing the transmission of Covid.
Now Govt expects people to sacrifice sharing Xmas with family & friends, just a few days after promising the opposite ❓
❌We need a clear exit strategy from this nightmarish, cycle of damaging lockdowns. https://t.co/8E1VektpOg

If Johnson decides to completely subvert Parliament and ignore his own MPs it could well be a very interesting New Year indeed for the Prime Minister.
